A good dance shoe should be light in weight and offer good stability and support for the dancer.
Ladies Latin Shoes
A Latin shoe is an open toe shoe with a lot of flexibility. It should fit tighter than a street shoe. The shoe will stretch after being worn several times. If the shoe is loose, it will not provide the support needed and could cause blisters. The shoe should fit snuggly on the foot. When the foot is securely in the heel cup the toes should come to the end of the shoe. Many dancers like the toes to come over the end of the shoe slightly so that when the toe is pointed very little shoe shows. This gives a much prettier line on the foot. Latin shoes are generally worn with a heel size of 2.5" or taller.
Ladies Ballroom Dance Shoes
The Ballroom shoe is a closed toe shoe used in the Smooth and Standard dances. It can be a pump or a shoe with a strap. In Standard or International dances, the shoe cannot be open on the sides. Smooth or American dancers have more flexibility on styles or dance shoes while keeping the closed toe theme. Most ladies prefer a 2.5" heel,
Ballroom Dance Shoes for Gentlemen
The fit for the gentleman should also be tight and light in weight. The shoe will stretch after several wearings so the foot should not move in the shoe when new. The shoe should be tight without pinching. Ballroom shoes generally have a 1 inch heel. Latin shoes have a 1 1/2 inch heel.
